A

AMERICAN SHAOLIN:
KING OF THE KICKBOXERS II
(1992)
A teenager (Reese Madigan, pictured) travels to Asia to become a monk. As part of his "induction," Madigan has to shave his thick mop of brown hair to the skin! A monk uses a straight-edge razor (no shaving cream!) to shave Madigan completely bald., and he remains bald for the rest of the movie.

AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN (1982)
Navy recruits, including stars David Keith and Richard Gere, line up for haircuts (pictured). Keith has a brown scraggly mop top, Gere has shoulder-length black hair. We don't see the actual haircuts, or even the inside of the barber shop, but we do see the results: both are shaved almost bald! Their hair grows in gradually during the course of the movie, and is always kept neat. SEE ALSO: Keith in "Lords of Discipline."

ANDERSONVILLE (1996 - TV movie)
This Civil War movie looks at atrocities that occurred at a prisoner-of-war camp. The camp, originally planned to house 8,000, eventually swelled to 33,000. There's a scene where a Union prisoner gets about 18" of hair cut off. The movie is long and sort of depressing, but it does have some good scenes. Keep an eye out for the dark-haired union soldier with the goatee who appears about halfway through the movie.

B

BABY BLUE MARINE (1976)
Jan-Michael Vincent as a washout from Marine boot camp who's mistaken for a hero by a small town, and especially by Glynnis O'Connor (pictured) . There are no boot camp or haircut scenes, but Jan sports anice taper cut throughout the movie -- even though it's way too long, even for a washout. Never the less, considering the year the movie was made, 1976, it's a nice haircut. SEE ALSO: Vincent in "Tribes."

BATTLE CRY (1955)
"Battle Cry" follows several young recruits through bootcamp, to behind-the-lines duty as WWII Marines, and ultimately to bloody action in Japan. It starts out at USMC bootcamp, San Diego. Our long-haired heroes line up outside the base barbershop, and watch as freshly-cut recruits come out. Unfortunately, we don't see any actual induction haircuts, but we do see the immediate results of their trip to the barber shop -- they're all buzzed to the skin. One newly-shorn recruit rubs his head and complains, "I feel like a prickly pear!" A Navajo adds, "I've been scalped!" Now we skip ahead a few months, and Tab Hunter, who had a pretty short cut to begin with, now has the shortest haircut of the group, a crewcut with shaved sides. Fess Parker (Davy Crockett) has a very short taper with shaved sides. The bookworm has a great looking short taper that's slicked down a little. This guy's hair is always well groomed and totally under control. "Battle Cry" is a decent war film, even though it has some pretty hokey scenes which are comical by today's standards -- but it was 1955, after all, and the movie was a huge hit in its day. SEE ALSO: "The Boys in Co. C."

BLACKHAWK DOWN (2002)
TA helecopter goes down during a mission in Somolia. The haircuts are all perfect, especially star Josh Hartnett (pictured). Unfortunately, they are very rarely seen. As the movie is almost all action, the characters are not very well drawn. They are seen without helmets only briefly, in the beginning and end of the movie. Most of the men are Army Rangers with fresh or day-old high and tights.

Hartnett is seen without a helmet for a total of 5-10 minutes. His haircut is perfect, but rarely seen. If you add up total non-helmet screen time for EVERYONE, it would amount to no more than 20 minutes tops. In terms of haircuts, it's not so great. As a movie, it's like Gladiator meets Saving Pvt. Ryan. SEE ALSO: Hartnett in "Blow Dry."

BLOW DRY (2001)
Stars Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down). The plot, according to imdb.com: The annual British Hairdressing Championship comes to Keighley, a town where Phil and son Brian run a barbershop and Phil's ex-wife Shelly and her lover Sandra run a beauty salon. Phil and Shelly haven't talked in ten years, since she bolted; she's just found out her cancer is terminal; and, Ray Roberts, the reigning hairdressing champion, blows into town taunting Phil for retreating from competitive styling into barbering. Roberts also brings his daughter, Christina, who remembers Brian from when she was a little kid. Everything's set: Brian decides to enter the competition with his mom and Sandra. SEE ALSO: Hartnett in "Black Hawk Down."

THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR (1948)
It's after WWII. A young kid wakes one morning to find his curly locks have suddenly turned green. The horrified townsfolk suggest he shave his head, and perhaps his hair will grow back brown. The boy totally refuses. At first the boy's father supports him, but soon the pressure becomes unbearable. He decides that his son will get his head shaved — in the town barbershop, in full view of almost the entire town. "We'll get it done," he tells the scared boy.

When the boy sits in the barber chair, it's facing away from the mirror, so he can't watch the haircut. The whole town is crowded into the barbershop, and they laugh and jeer at the boy's plight. The boy squirms as his green curly locks are buzzed off (in a weirdly-edited scene), then his head is lathered up and razor-shaved. When the haircut's over, the barber presents the boy with a small, handheld mirror. The boy hold it up, and sees his totally bald head for the first time, both front and back at once. An expression of horror crosses his face, and he turns away in shocked disbelief. Later, he vows to let his hair grow back ... to symbolize "world peace." (I swear I'm not making this up.)

THE BOYS IN CO. C (1978)
This Marine movie has a great basic training haircut scene, flawed only by the fact that it shows only before and after shots -- no "during." The haircuts, perfect high and tights, are great -- but unrealistically long for new recruits. Oh well. Recruits include Andrew Stevens. His hair is a bushy mop-top, and other recruits have shoulder length hair. Features classic line as the DI (F. Lee Emery, a real former DI who also stars in "Full Metal Jacket" as a DI) pushes long-haired, bearded hippie int o barber shop, he yells, "Do a special job on Jesus for me. I want to see Jesus bald headed!" The recruit's hair grows out gradually during the course of the film, but it's never allowed to get too long.

BRUBAKER (1980)
Robert Redford gets a haircut in prison as a warden masquerading as an inmate. A few other new inmates get butchered, but Redford's the star -- so he gets the world's best prison haircut (which grows in immediately after one brief scene). Good line -- Redford to prison barber before the haircut begins: "Leave the ears." SEE ALSO: Redford in "The Candidate," "The Sting."

C

THE CANDIDATE (1972)
Californian lawyer Bill McKay (Robert Redford) fights for the little man. His charisma and integrity get him noticed by the Democratic Party machine and he is persuaded to run for the Senate against an apparently unassailable incumbent. It's agreed he can handle it his own way, on his own terms. But once he's in the race and his prospects begin to improve, the deal starts to change. He is told to "get a haircut, and lose the sideburns." He complies. There are no barbershop scenes, but we do get to see the results of Redford's haircut, as his hair remains shorter (with shorter sideburns) for the rest of the movie. SEE ALSO: Redford in "Brubaker," "The Sting."

CHILD'S PLAY 3 (1992)
Chuckie the killer doll is on the loose again. Who cares? Well, the kid he attacked in the first two movies, for one. He's now a long-haired teen who's been sent to military school. He's ordered to the barbershop first thing -- and the stuff in the background indicates that the school barber is an obvious, blatant fetishist. He's portrayed as borderline psycho. The "during" shots of the haircut are way too brief, and we don't see the finished haircut until the next scene, when the kid's got a nifty flattop.

CHUBASCO (1968)
It's about a rebellious older teenager who goes to work on a fishing boat with a crew of "salty, old dog" types. First, they start harassing him about his long hair, and one says "No Beatles on my boat!" Next, several crewmen hold him down and, jeering and laughing, start to discuss what kind of haircut he's going to get. The cook, who has been a haircutter, approaches him holding a pair of scissors and a straight razor. The kid struggles, but it's no use. Just then, the Captain walks in (damn!). No haircut (double damn!). Oh well, it's fun imagining what SHOULD have happened next.

CODEBREAKERS (2005)
Cable TV movie. In 1951, a cheating scandal rocks West Point academy as 83 cadets -- including the son of the school's football coach -- are implicated and ultimately dismissed. One of the cadets is Zachery Ty Bryan, former child actor co-star of "Home Improvement." No haircutting or barbershop scenes, just lots of great fifties West Point haircuts like the one pictured here.

COLD TURKEY (1969)
Cigarette company bets the residents of a town that they can't quit smoking. There's a brief haircut scene where the barber, played by Vincent Gardenia, has a teenager in the chair (pictured). He starts the clippers, but is so shaky from nicotine withdrawal that he accidentally buzzes right up the center of the kid's head, from the crown to the front. The kid is seen later in the film, but with a hat covering his head.

COURAGE UNDER FIRE (1996)
Officer Denzil Washington is assigned to investigate posthumous Medal of Honor candidate Meg Ryan. During Washington's investigation, he interviews Matt Damon (pictured), a former soldier. There aren't any barbershop or haircut scenes in this movie, but a very thin and young Matt Damon (in one of his first movie roles) is shown "before and after" in two different scenes. His hair is fairly short during the first scene (set in the present), and in the second flashback scene he's got a high and tight military buzz. SEE ALSO: Damon in "Rounders."

CRY BABY (1994)
Johnny Depp is a 50's greaser in reform school. Near the end of this whacky movie (a bad musical) the guard takes Johnny and a bunch of other guys to the school barber shop for haircuts. While waiting on line, Johnny breaks into song and 3 or 4 guys in the chairs sing along while getting buzzcuts. But wait -- here's the big bummer: Johnny's girlfriend and lawyer get him out before it's his turn. Damn! Why couldn't they have waited just a few minutes longer?

D

DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993)
The opposite of "Dogfight." There are no haircut scenes in this movie -- but there are loads of HORRIBLE haircuts (some pictured here)! Well, what did you expect -- it's set in a high school in the 1970s. But it's great fun to watch the never-ending parade of longhaired kids, and use your imagination. Actors include Ben Affleck and Jeremy London (Party Of Five).

DEATH BE NOT PROUD (1975 - TV movie)
Teenager Robbie Benson has a brain tumor. To prepare him for surgery, a doctor takes all his hair off with a buzzer, then shaves him completely bald with shaving cream and a razor. We see the whole thing, start to finish. Benson's anthropologist dad offers him these comforting words: "In some tribes, having your head shaved is a sign of manhood." (This pic isn't from this movie, but Benson's hair looks about the same here as it does in the movie -- at least until he's shaved absolutely bald for the brain operation.)

DOGFIGHT (1991)
River Phoenix as a Marine. There are no actual haircut scenes in this movie -- just loads of great looking cuts! It's about four young Marines trying to win a contest to find the "dog," or ugliest date. The jarheads all have beautiful, regulation HnT's that are perfect throughout, and shown from every possible angle. Phoenix's hair is cut high and tight with an ultra-stiff bumber. It's a bit longer and looser at the very end of the movie (set years later), providing great comparison to first scenes, when it is totally within real Marine regulations. Oo-rah to Dogfight!

DRESS GREY (1986 - TV movie)
Military academy murder mystery. Opens with a 30-second scene where plebes get induction haircuts in a temporary barbershop in a gym. The camera pans over three plebes getting buzzed, with clippers shown cutting rather lengthy hair, then stops at plebe number four, the plebe whom the story centers around. Apparently his haircut has just finished, because the cloth is removed from his neck. In a robotic action, he reaches up to feel his new haircut -- an almost to-the-skin buzz. The rest of the movie features cadets with way-too-long hair no real academy would allow.

DUMB AND DUMBER (1994)
A Farrelley Brothers comedy starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as two brainless losers who try to return a suitcase full of money to its pretty owner. After a journey full of accidents they arrive in snowy Aspen, Colorado and try to find her. Features a very brief scene where Carrey and Daniels get "dumb and dumber" haircuts (pictured).

E

ELVIS (1979 - TV movie)
Biography of the life of Elvis Presley. Stars Kurt Russell as the King, and Shelly Winters as Elvis' mother. Russell's normally brown hair is dyed black for this role (just like the real Elvis, who dyed his dark brown hair black). Elvis gets drafted, and there's a brief haircut scene that depicts his induction into the Army. Russell is shown sitting in the barber's chair, uttering the actual words Elvis said during his induction haircut: "Hair today, gone tomorrow."
SEE ALSO: "This Is Elvis."

F

FIGHT CLUB (1999)
A violent and disturbing portrait of disaffected twenty-somethings in an empty consumer society. One guy shaves his own head with electric clippers in a bathroom, but the scene (like the whole movie) is pretty dark so it's hard to see. Brad Pitt (pictured) has a longish taper during most of the movie, but he does appear with a very close buzz towards the end. There are no actual haircut scenes shown. Warning: Do not reveal the surprise ending! SEE ALSO: "Legends of the Fall," featuring Brad with very long hair, and "Seven," featuring Brad's best movie haircut. (Neither movie listed here.)

FULL METAL JACKET
(1987) (FIVE STAR CLASSIC)
WOW! Opens with extended, 100% accurate Marine haircut scene. All haircuts shown from seconds after the start to the finish. (Pictured right: FMJ's lead actor, Matthew Modine, aka Pvt. Joker) Each pass of the buzzer is pure cinematic genius. Great blank looks on recruits faces as they're shaved to total baldness. The scene is only 75 seconds long, but it SEEMS like it goes on forever. The recruits stay bald for the entire first half of the movie, set on Parris Island but not actually filmed there. This one's a true haircut classic, rivaled only by "Tribes."

G

G.I. JANE (1997)
Demi Moore joins the Navy SEALS in this movie directed by Ridley Scott (Bladerunner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down). There are no induction haircut scenes, but there is a famous scene where Demi buzzes her own head to be "one of the boys" (pictured). And even though there are no other haircut scenes, there are still plenty of bald-buzzed SEALS in the movie.

GLEAMING THE CUBE (1988)
A very young Christian Slater (pictured) plays a skate-boarder with a punk hairstyle. Someone is killed, and young Christian is caught in the midst of it. To clean up his image, he gives himself a shorter haircut while standing in front of a mirror. The actual cut is not shown. In the following scenes, Slater goes to school with his new ivy-leagueish look and his friends are completely horrified.

H

HAIR (1979)
Near the end of this movie musical, Treat Williams has to cut off his thick, shoulder length brown hair to sneak onto an army base. A friend of his hacks off his hair with a pair of scissors, leaving it about a scruffy quarter-inch in length. We don't see the actual hacking, just before and after (pictured above). Every other guy in the movie has a vintage, shoulder-length hippie 'do throughout.

HAIL HERO (1969)
A very young Michael Douglas returns home from college with long hair. When his brother (an equally young Peter Strauss) sees him, he exclaims "Wait until [Dad] sees your hair!" The excitement builds as we wait for the encounter -- and when dad finally sees his long-haired son ... bam! He doesn't waste time getting mad. He just instantly sits his son down, grabs some scissors and gives him a haircut! What fun watching Douglas squirm as his long locks are snipped off. Too bad Dad didn't have some electric clippers handy -- but for an amateur, he gives Mike a surprisingly good cut.

HEARTBREAK RIDGE (1986)
Gunnery Sgt. Clint Eastwood prepares a Marine platoon for the Grenada invasion. When he arrives, their hair is so long that they "look like models," according to Gunny Eastwood. "I want you high and tight by tomorrow," he orders the platoon. Sure enough, in the next scene, they ARE high and tight -- but unfortunately, there are no barbershop scenes. A satisfied Eastwood runs his fingers up and down the sides of their newly-shown heads (pictured above).

HEAVEN WITH A GUN (1969)
Glenn Ford stars in a feud between cattle and sheep ranchers set in the old west. During a scene about 25 minutes into the movie, cowboys use old fashioned sheep shears (there were no electric clippers then) to give a forced haircut to a sheep shearer. The cowboys all stand around him, laughing and hollering. We get to see the haircut from many angles as they roughly push the victim around, clipping his entire head. The scene lasts several minutes. Result: the victim's head is mostly bald with a few random patches of hair left.

HER ALIBI (1989)
Tom Selleck (pictured) as a writer of bad detective novels who has writer's block. He pretends to be the alibi of a beautiful woman (Paulina Porizkova) who was arrested for murder, at first thinking her innocent. The haircut scene has Paulina Porizkova, in tight jeans, moving between Tom Selleck's legs while she cuts his hair. He's nervous because he's very attracted to Porizkova, but worried that she's a killer.

I

I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND (1978)
Unrivaled build-up, colossal let down. It's about teens in a frenzy to get tickets to The Beatles first Ed Sullivan Show appearance. One dark-blonde haired kid has a true mop-top "Beatle haircut" (puke) that his father detests. Dad offers him tickets if he gets a haircut. Near the end of the movie the kid gets desperate, and agrees.

Dad drags him to an old fashioned barber shop, and forces him into a chair. Dad growls to the barber "I want him to look like a Marine!" The barber picks up a pair of clippers with no guard on it and clicks them on. He brings them slowly towards the kid's head, who can't move because his father is holding him down. Suddenly one of the kid's friends bursts through the door, creates a distraction, and the kid runs out of the barber shop -- with the tickets, but no haircut. Damn! Still, the build-up is great.

IN THE ARMY NOW (1994)
Pauly Shore and several other Army recruits are shown getting realistic army haircuts, in a realistic Army barbershop. Though the scene is fairly brief, it shows at least three recruit cuts before, during and after. There's also some funny dialogue, as Shore describes the haircut he wants, telling the Army barber he's "known for his hair." Naturally, the barber proceeds to shave his head to near baldness (pictured). A good scene that leaves you wanting to see the rest of the guys in line get their haircuts -- unfortunately they don't show it. The movie doesn't get five stars because the scene is so brief, but it is still a haircut classic.

J

JAILHOUSE ROCK (1957)
Vince Everett (Elvis Presley) commits manslaughter, and is sent to jail. One brief scene (pictured left), strangely reminiscent of Elvis' famous real-life Army haircut, shows the king in the prison barbershop getting a new-inmate haircut. The haircut scene is brief, but this is still one of Elvis' best movies. While in the big house, Elvis' cellmate, a former country singer, introduces him to the record business. Elvis takes to it so well that he decides to become a singer when he gets out. SEE ALSO: "This is Elvis," listed below.

L

THE LONGEST YARD (1974)
Long haired, mustached Burt Reynolds is an ex-football player who gets thrown into jail. In a great prison haircut scene, Burt's scraggly 70's mane is shown being buzzed up in back. The guards shave off half his mustache, then pause to mock him as he sits helplessly, forced to endure the humiliation with half a 'stache. The haircut he's given isn't a military-style buzz, but it's MUCH shorter than the look he came into prison with.

THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE (1983)
The movie takes place in the 1950's or 1960's at a fictitious southern military college, male only. The story line is about racial integration, and lots of awesome haircuts can be seen throughout on different cad ets. Crewcuts, tight tapers, and slicked, short styles are haircuts of the period. David Keith (pictured), Richard Gere's buddy from "Officer & Gentlemen" stars, and has a nice buzz. Also featured is the head cop on the syndicated TV series "Pacific Blue" (but he's younger in this, and has a much better haircut). SEE ALSO: Keith in "An Officer and A Gentleman."

M

THE MATRIX (1999)
Keneau Reeves (pictured left) stars in a mind-blowing digital effects orgy. Keneau starts the movie with a nice taper cut, but after he finds out what "The Matrix" is, he is ... umm ... reborn. At this point, he appears in several scenes with a completely shaved head. In later scenes, his hair gradually grows out again into a nice taper, but never becomes unruly. (The movie gets a two-star haircut rating, but gets four stars just as a movie.) SEE ALSO: "Matrix 2: Reloaded," coming soon to a theater near you.

MAJOR PAYNE (1994)
Damon Wayans plays Major Payne, a crazed ROTC instructor, in this comedy. His first order to his motley crew of young recruits: shave your heads! We don't see the actual shaving (boo!), just before and after shots of the boys. But the movie's pretty funny. Worth a rental.

ME, MYSELF & IRENE (1999)
Jim Carrey (pictured) stars in this comedy from the Farrelley brothers (Something About Mary). Carrey plays a Rhode Island state trooper with a severe case of split personality named Charlie. He is otherwise mild-mannered and non confrontational, until somebody or something pushes him a little too far. That's when his maniacal alter-ego, Hank, takes over. There are no haircut or barbershop scenes, but Carrey sports a nice buzzcut during the entire movie.

MEMPHIS BELLE (1990)
A WWII movie about the young crew of a B-17 named "Memphis Belle" who are about to complete their 25th mission in WWII. The story line is fictitious, although the Memphis Bell did exist, and was the first plane to complete 25 missions. There are no haircutting scenes, but some great slicked tapers, particularly during the photo and dance scenes. You also get to compare the guys' unslicked, windblown look with their slicked look. Stars Eric Stoltz, Sean Astin, Harry Connick, Jr., and Matthew Bodine.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (1978)
Billy Pilgrim (Brad Davis) is caught trying to smuggle dope out of Turkey. In a Turkish prison, he is given a buzz haircut by the prison barber, who has clippers that hang from the ceiling. Davis' scraggly, hippy-length hair is buzzed to about 1/8 inch, with an EXTREMELY high back hairline, and stays that way most of the movie. "Why you keep your hair so short?" asks an inmate. "To remind me of how much I hate this place," Brad answers.

MOMENT OF TRUTH: TO WALK AGAIN
(1994 - TV movie)

Cameron Bancroft (Beverly Hills 90210, The Cape; pictured here) joins the Marines. Great haircut scene where his long-ish black hair (before pic shown below right) is buzzed down to about 1/8 inch while he sits on a stool, with barber's cloth around his neck. And -- get a grip on yourself -- we get see almost the entire haircut.

Bancroft's voiceover: "I didn't think they were going to shave my head so I'd look like one of the three stooges." He should only know that REAL Marine recruits get their heads shaved BALD! Apparently he gets to like his new buzz, since his hair is kept that way throughout his entire struggle to overcome a leg injury sustained during basic training.

MURDER IN THE FIRST (1996)
Kevin Bacon (pictured) plays a prison inmate sent to the dungeon at Alcatraz for several years. When he's finally let out, he's given a shower and a buzzcut, which he keeps for the rest of the film. Dim lighting makes it difficult to see the brief haircut scene. SEE ALSO: Kevin Bacon set a domesticated punk-haircut standard in "Footloose," not listed here.

N

NATURAL BORN KILLERS (1994)
Woody Harrelson (pictured) as a misfit who teams with a female partner on a violent crime spree that, to put it mildly, goes out of control. Near the end of the film (around the 1:20 mark) an imprisoned Woody prepares for a TV interview by buzzing off his shoulder-length hair with a cordless trimmer. In a bizarrely-edited sequence, we see him making the first passes as he shaves the front of his head nearly bald. He's hairless for the rest of the picture. Warning: Extremely violent content.

O

OFFICIAL DENIAL (1994)
Parker Stevenson plays a man called in as an expert when the government captures two aliens. In an effort to communicate with the two small, bald creatures, he decides to make himself look more like them so he won't look as threatening -- by shaving his head! He looks in the mirror speculatively, runs his fingers through his longish floppy hair, then, in the next scene, is completely bald and smooth! He stays that way through most of the movie, except for the end, "after ten months have passed" when they show him with his hair "grown back."

THE OUTSIDERS (1983)
This movie is bursting with teen idols: Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Maccio (all pictured). It has a scene where Maccio and another kid accidently kill someone. They go "on the lam," and cut each other's hair so they won't fit their "wanted poster" descriptions. They use a switch blade on each other's hair, and one bleaches his dark hair to further change his appearance. Everything except the bleaching is shown.

P

PAPER MOON (B&W-1973)
Ryan O'Neal (pictured before the cut) gets a 1930's short and slick haircut. The movie does not show Ryan's actual haircut in progress, but we do see O'Neal in the barber chair with a nice white pin-striped cloth around his neck. And the result of O'Neal's haircut is shown: no Redford-style fakes here -- O'Neal's hair was actually cut really short, and neatly slicked down, thirties style. SEE ALSO: "A Bridge Too Far," not listed here, featuring O'Neal with an equally short haircut.

PHENOMENON (1997)
John Travolta (pictured) is singled out and somewhat estranged by his small country town because of a strange phenomenon that makes him a genius, and gives him extraordinary powers. At one point, he becomes very despondent and stops caring for himself. His love interest, played by Kyra Sedgwick, visits him at the height of his hardship. She gives him a shampoo, haircut, and shave.

POLICE ACADEMY (1984)
A comedic look at training to be a policeman. Two recruits are ordered to the Police Academy barber shop, where they tell the barber "Take it all off!" I guess the limited budget couldn't afford retakes -- the recruits are wearing long-hair wigs, and we don't see any hair being buzzed. But when the haircut's done, they've both got to-the-skin-buzzes. Then they discover they COULD have just gotten trims. But we all know they look better buzzed anyway!

PORKY'S 2 - THE NEXT DAY (1985)
First of two sequels to Porky's, the teen sex comedy about a strip club named Porky's and the zany antics ofthe under-aged teens who hang around it. In this installment, we learn that racism is bad as the gang goes up against a bunch of bigots. In the end, the bigots are humiliat ed. They're taken to the high school gym, where they're forced to get their heads shaved. While we don't see the actual head shaving, we do see the results. The bigot's clothes are taken off of them, and they are forced to walk through the street bald and naked, while the entire town watches and laughs (pictured).

THE PRINCESS AND THE MARINE
(2001 - TV movie)

The real-life story of a US Marine who married an Arab princess without her ultra-traditional family's permission. There are no bootcamp, barbershop or haircut scenes, but the Marine is played by Mark Paul Gosselaar, who we remember as the long-haired "Zach" from TV's "Saved By The Bell." Nice to finally see shaggy old Zach with a decent haircut (pictured). Screech is next! The movie also features several Marines with good cuts, although most of them are not short enough to qualify as true regulation cuts. SEE ALSO: Reruns of "Saved By The Bell," not listed here.

R

THE RAGE: CARRIE 2 (1998)
Inferior sequel to the classic horror film "Carrie" (1976). This movie is virtually unwatchable — expect for a 30-second head-shaving scene that occurs 70 minutes into the movie, as a football team shaves their heads to get psyched for the big game. It's a great setting, but almost NO actual shaving is shown. And the young actor with the longest hair in the movie (Jason London) is the ONLY team member who refuses to shave his head, really killing the fun. "You're going to ruin the effect!" his team members taunt him. How true!

RENAISSANCE MAN (1994)
Danny DeVito stars as an advertising man who is slowly sliding downhill. When he is fired from his job in Detroit, he signs up for unemployment. One day they find him a job -- teaching Army recruits, including Mark Wahlberg (pictured). There are no induction or haircutting scenes, but when DeVito first goes to the base there's a a tantalizingly brief glimpse of recruits waiting in line for haircuts. Short haircuts show up throughout the rest of the movie, and DeVito's class has several buzzed student-soldiers.

THE ROCK (1996)
High-octane action movie about terrorists holding hostages in Alcatraz prison (known as "The Rock"). Features a haircut scene showing a prison inmate with shoulder length hair getting a flattop. Most of the haircut is shown.

ROCKY 4 (1985)
This fourth sequel to the original "Rocky" film features Dolph Lundgren as a Russian fighter who "accidently" kills Apollo Creed in an exhibition boxing match, then later fights the Italian Stallion himself -- Rocky Balboa. The movie is on this list because in it, Lundgren sports what is probably THE classic movie flattop of all time. Don't take my word for it -- rent the movie, or take a look at the picture left, and decide for yourself! But if you don't think this is a great flattop, you may need glasses.

ROMPER STOMPER (1993)
Russell Crowe (pictured) in a very strongly ANTI-skinhead movie. Nazi skinheads in Melbourne take out their anger on local Vietnamese, who are seen as threatening racial purity. Finally the Vietnamese have had enough and attack the skinheads in an all-out confrontation, sending the skinheads running. This very strongly ANTI-skinhead movie is extremely tense, with strong doses of violence and sex reminiscent of "A Clockwork Orange." It was a huge hit in Austrailia. Romper Stomper features, according to one recruit, "the best burr cuts of any movie ever made." SEE ALSO: Crowe in "Gladiator," "A Beautiful Mind."

ROUNDERS (1998)
A retired con man/gambler with a knack for numbers (Matt Damon) is lured back into playing cards and cons by an old friend (Ed Norton). During the movie, Damon is shown in a barbershop, getting a shave. He's lathered up, and we see a barber shaving him with a straight razor. The scene only lasts a minute or two, and the barbershop is fairly dark.

RUSHMORE (1999)
Jason Schwartzman (son of Talia Shire and nephew of Francis Coppola) stars as Max Fischer, a 15-year-old attending the prestigious Rushmore Academy on scholarship. There, Max befriends industrial magnate and Rushmore alumnus Herman Blume (Bill Murray). One fairly brief scene shows Max getting a haircut (pictured).

S

SCHOOL TIES (1992)
A jewish boy goes to an elite prep school in the 1950's and hides his religion until a bigot exposes him. This movie has an amazing cast. They're all superstars now, but none of them were even famous when this film was made. They're all young, and they all have nice short haircuts: Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon, Chris O'Donnell, and Ben Affleck (pictured). SEE ALSO: Damon in "Rounders," O'Donnell in "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin."

SILVER STRAND (1995)
The U.S. Navy selects from its ranks a small group of persons to send through unadulterated hell. If they are able to walk at the end of this period, they become "Navy Seals." Brian Del Piso (Gil Bellows) is a member of class number 195. In the beginning, there's a scene where we see Bellows being inducted into the Seals, and getting his hair buzzed off at a makeshift outdoor barber chair set up on the beach. It's a long scene with the entire cut shown, before and after. Worth a look.

STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997)
Futuristic tale of teens joining the military to fight off alien bugs. No induction haircut scenes in this movie, but lead actor Casper Van Dien (pictured left) has a nice short haircut that's neatly parted on the side throughout. As for the movie itself, if you like machine-gunning big bugs -- suffice to say you will love this movie. It's guaranteed that you've never seen so much machine-gunning of big bugs in your entire life.

THE STING (1973)
Stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford (pictured) as 1930s-era con men. In one scene, Redford goes to the barbershop to get cleaned up for a con-job. No during shots -- we fade to an after shot where his tousled blonde hair has been trimmed, combed neatly and slicked down real good. Yet in the very next scene, he's walking home after the haircut, and his hair looks almost exactly as it did before the haircut! The "slick" has vanished, and it looks like virtually NO hair was cut. Apparently, Mr. Redford has the world's fastest growing hair. Still a great movie.

STRIPES (1981)
Be all that you can be! Bill Murray and Harold Ramis join the army. In the barbershop, we see a row of recruits in chairs, getting their induction cuts, including John Candy (pictured) and Judge Reinhold. The camera pans over them during the cuts, then we see a fearful Murray and Ramis waiting on line. We don't see their cuts. Next scene shows everyone outside the barbershop, adjusting to their new cuts, which are something of a letdown. They're all above the ears, but not nearly short enough (except Candy's, for some reason). Totally unrealistic, since the army shaves recruits almost bald, but the movie is funny, and the scene is worth watching.

TAPS (1981)
Wildly implausible tale of a group of rebellious young cadets who take over a military academy to prevent it from being closed. Movie features three actors who would later become major stars: Tom Cruise, Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton. The haircuts on most of the cast in this movie are NOT of genuine military-school caliber, with the exception of a very young Cruise, who plays an intense cadet with a nice buzzcut (pictured right). Also starring George C. Scott as the school's headmaster. SEE ALSO: Cruise in "Top Gun," listed below.

THIS BOY'S LIFE (B&W-1993)
Leonardo DiCaprio's mom doesn't mind his long greaser haircut, but when she remarries domineering Robert De Niro, they move to the small town of Concrete, and it's off to the Concrete barber shop for young Leonardo (pictured). The scene is brief, but memorable. "There," Deniro tells the freshly-cut Leonardo, "Now you look like a Concrete boy!" Apparently DeNiro forces Leonardo to visit the barber shop often, as his hair is kept in a well-trimmed flat top. By the end of the movie, though, time has passed and it's back to long and greasy—and, unfortunately (for haircut fans anyway) DeNiro gets dumped by Leonardo's mom.

THIS IS ELVIS (1981)
A cheezy docu-drama of Presley's life that mixes real footage with reenactments. The highlight: The King was drafted in March 1958, and we see real footage of Elvis getting his actual induction haircut -- a flattop buzzcut. Since real-looking haircuts can't be faked, all movie haircuts are "real," but this one is REALLY real!

In fact, it's quite possibly the most famous real-life haircut in military history! This documentary contains a 10-second scene showing a buzzer being applied to the side and back of Elvis' head as he sits in the barber's chair, then we see him out of the chair, rubbing the top of his new crewcut. There's an Elvis song playing over the soundtrack, so we don't get to hear the actual words Elvis said during his induction haircut: "Hair today, gone tomorrow."
SEE ALSO: "Elvis," starring Kurt Russell.

TIGERLAND (1999)
A group of recruits goes through Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana's infamous Tigerland, the last stop before Vietnam for tens of thousands of young men in 1971. This documentary-style film has no barbershop or haircut scenes, but most of the cast has regulation cuts.

TOO YOUNG THE HERO (1988)
Rick Schroder (pictured before the haircut) in the true story of Calvin Graham, who joined the Navy during World War II at age 12. In spite of his young age, he received a purple heart for his bravery in the battle of Guadalcanal. Schroder has a standard boy's Ivy League-ish cut when he joins. The great induction-haircut scene shows him waiting on line, then feeling his freshly-buzzed crewcut with a bewildered look after he gets out of the barber's chair.

TOP GUN (1986)
Stars Tom Cruise as Maverick, a pilot who is sent to Top Gun Naval Flying School. No haircut scenes, just the famous slick, side-parted taper haircuts of Cruise, and the slightly punkish look of co-star Val Kilmer, known in this movie as Iceman (both stars pictured). At the time, 1986, the cuts in this movie were considered shockingly short! SEE ALSO: Cruise in "Taps."

TRIBES (1970 - TV movie) (FIVE STAR CLASSIC)
A hippie is drafted into the Marines. It opens with a 100% accurate induction-haircut scene. All recruits are shown standing in line with very nervous expressions, and shown almost throughout their induction haircuts. Better still, it's set in the 60's, and they all have -- HAD -- very long hair. Main character Adrian Stone (Jan-Michael Vincent) is a flower child with shoulder-length blonde hair parted in the middle.

Watching him get his head totally shaved is a rare treat. Several boot camp haircuts are shown in their (almost) entirety. The entire scene lasts just over two minutes, but it's so good it seems like hours. JMV remains bald throughout the movie, but in flashbacks he remembers scenes of himself and his girlfriend frolicking in a field. In the flashbacks, he's the perfect hippie. Then we return to the "present," and he's a totally bald Marine recruit again. Has to be seen to be believed. May never be topped. A true haircut classic, rivaled only by "Full Metal Jacket."

WALKING ACROSS EGYPT (1999)
Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Home Improvement) gets a home haircut from grandma (Ellen Burstyn) in this direct-to-video coming of age story. The haircut scene (pictured) is very brief, and no real haircutting action is shown. But as you can see, JTT looks a whole lot better afterwards. Hey Grandma, what about them sideburns? Isn't it just like a woman barber to screw them up?

WISH YOU WERE HERE (1987)
Opens with a scene in a 1950's hairdressing school/salon. First is the ladies' department, then a brief scene in the downstairs men's salon, with scissors and clippers being used on a customer in the chair. An authentic reconstruction of a 50's barbershop, with great period atmosphere. The film is great too (about a precocious 16-year old girl -- the barber's daughter), with a couple of good men's cuts on view throughout.

Z

Z (1969)
Director Costa-Gravis chronicles the overthrow of the democratic government in Greece. While historically accurate, it is told as a combination mystery and thriller. In one scene, student protesters are given forced haircuts by police in the town square during a riot. Unfortunately, we don't really see the results.
